BORING FLOORING

BORING FLOORING

When it comes to decorating interiors, some say flooring is boring and is the least exciting part of the design process.  For many years, wall to wall carpet was the solution to all flooring surfaces.  Even kitchens and baths were once popular rooms to carpet.  Today; flooring trends have dramatically changed to hard finish surfaces throughout a home and are the leading product in the flooring industry, over and beyond carpet.  Using hard finish surfaces throughout a home provides a crisp, clean look; sometimes leaving a cold and UN inviting feel.  In addition; there is always the question on how to control the noise with hard flooring surfaces.

-SPLASH IT UP WITH AREA RUGS-

Vibrant area rugs in all shapes, sizes and colors provide the solution to both noise control and the look and feel of warmth.  Additionally; area rugs define and frame in a space with in a room, even over carpet.  Regardless of your style and taste, area rugs also provide a great opportunity for a statement piece in the space.  This temporary accessory can easily be changed out to give an updated color or style rather inexpensively without the remodel cost of the entire room.

There are many great advantages to hard surface flooring – the fun of designing with area rugs is just one of them.

2016 DESIGN TRENDS

2016 DESIGN TRENDS:

The hottest trend in 2016 is the long-known furniture pieces from the 1950’s through the 1970’s. Mid-Century furniture is making a huge come back this year. Bold geometric patterned furniture pieces with colors of green, gray, and orange are flying off the floors of resale and antique shops and flying into family homes and businesses.

Behind the Mid-Century furniture craze, the industrial look continues to be popular with the millenniums. Clean lines and minimal detail to furnishings and accessories make a sheik look in style .

Black metals are no longer sidelined in 2016 as the metal for wrought iron outdoor furniture or bed frames. The unflashy material is appearing on appliance finishes, hardware, bathroom fixtures, and even flatware.  In addition to black metal; copper will be the statement metal for chandeliers in 2016.

Lastly, The color palette for 2016 is filled with shades of pink, red and orange.  Orange dominates the accessory market to include decorative pillows, lamps, candles, wall art and area rugs.  Hues of gray will continue to be the wall color of choice as the neutral.  New Smart phone apps that are very helpful to select wall color options are Color Capture, ColorSmart, and ColorSnap.  All allow you to touch a wall color, tap a photo of the room you would like to paint,   and view various hues to help in your wall color selection.

HOW TO MAKE A SMALL ROOM APPEAR LARGER

One of the easiest and most effective home staging and design tips to make a small space appear larger is to angle the furniture placement.

Angled lines visually push the walls apart, making the eye zigzag across the room rather than looking straight down a long space.

Be sure all the furniture pieces are angled.  For example; the sofa and the loveseat should meet at a right angle. If there is not room to angle the furniture, consider eliminating a piece as it will also help the room look more spacious. If there is no furniture at all, an area rug put at a slight angle can also make a noticeable difference in the perceived size of the room.

Angling furniture is also great to fill in empty corners for long and narrow spaces or where there is not a lot of furniture and accessories.  There is less need for wall art when furniture placement does not line the walls as the angled furniture itself becomes the focal point.

What Color Should I Paint My Walls?

Dark Furnishings pop with mint walls.

Color strikes an emotion and can make us feel great. Often, I am asked “what color should I paint my walls?” One sector of the populous is reluctant to paint walls with color leaving walls a boring beige or white. The second sector of the populous goes crazy with explosions of wall color that make the space look confusing. The third sector of the populous gets it right with the perfect meld of colors. If you are not sure what wall color to use when preparing a home for sale or re-decorating your existing space, follow these tips;

1. TIP for BEIGE or WHITE WALLS; If the space feels cold, select a paint hue one or two shades darker than the current color. It will provide color to warm up the space without stressing over too much color.
2. TIP for EXPLOSIONS of WALL COLOR; Tone down the color with selecting a paint hue one to two shades lighter than the current color. Another option is to leave one accent wall the bright color and tone down the other walls with the lightest hue on the spectrum. It will provide a calmer feel to the space.
3. TIP for THE PERECT WALL COLOR; Select a paint hue in the middle of the spectrum that match the flooring and furnishings. A darker wood tone dining set will pop off the wall with a mint hue that is in the middle. From there, vibrant colors can be added in wall art and accessories to meld all the colors together. It will provide a cohesive and warm feel.

REMEMBER; Well designed rooms are one in which it’s not about the walls, but about complimenting the homes best features and furnishings.
